Revitalize
Revitalize is an adaptive redevelopment of the White Bay Power Station, which features design that does not take away the original essence of the building. Its history can be seen and felt through the original eroded materials which have been respectfully and considerately replaced, intentionally chosen to reflect the current state of the original building. Before the land was reclaimed, the WBPS was a wetland housing hundreds of native species of flora and fauna. The new function will be a space of education, where students and adults of all ages can visit and expand their knowledge of our nation’s native ecosystems. The WBPS was erected 11 years after the inauguration of the Australian Commonwealth in Sydney. This event marked great significance for the growth of Sydney as a city and to highlight the immense importance of such an event, Triumphal Arches were erected to signpost the official parade route for the inauguration ceremony. These arches as a symbol, repre-sented to the people of Sydney the countries newfound strength, expansion and transition into a new phase of life. This arched civic space, was transformative as a physical threshold which the pro-cession passed. Within the redevelopment of the WBPS, this symbolic archway will be imitated to represent the transition and re-birth of the building from a power station to a Land management and Botanical Research, Documentation and Education centre.
