In Land and Water

To stand on the La Perouse peninsula and look down upon the expanse of glistening ocean, is to be reminded of the beauty of the natural environment.

In Land and Water is a proposed brief for the La Perouse Headland and Bare Island rocky islet informed by the community’s ubiquitous need to develop an immersive civic centre with a potent emphasis on social academia. The new centre for social and cultural activities will host several new functions designed to increase the domestic viability of the site. The precincts marine and terrestrial context have been utilised to overlay the design of the new brief to commemorate the ephemeral nature of the past Aboriginal, British and French communities whose experiences where shaped by the influence of the Land and Sea.

Looking down upon an expanse of glistening ocean, heritage architecture shapes the lens through which visitors are reminded of the beauty of the natural environment, ultimately enhancing human emotions and connections with space. The existing Bare Island defence fort has been re-imaged as a Museum of Civilisation allowing the permeance of both natural light and sea water. The Cable Station Museum and Macquarie Watch Tower have also been re-vitalised as the community’s civic centre providing public learning and hospitality venues respectively. As such, there has been an evident and significant attempt to address the whole human condition, comprising body, mind and spirit in a manner that promotes human dignity and social responsibility.
