ADAPTIVE
The ADAPTIVV Creative Precinct aims to reinvigorate the La Perouse Headland and Bare Island region through creative spaces and initiatives. The current urban isolation of La Perouse provides an opportunity for a creative cluster where individuals can inspire and be inspired. ADAPTIVV brings a diverse demographic to La Perouse through an artist relocation program which opens up new opportunities for collaboration between creative individuals and the wider community. ADAPTIVV utilises art as a means to celebrate the rich indigenous history of the site. The key spaces of the precinct include the Expression Hub, Reading Den, Museum and Contemporary Art Exhibition. These spaces provide opportunity for learning, creating and experiencing art and allow visitors to truly immerse themselves in creative expression. The flexible and adjustable architecture and interiors ensure that the once static site continues to grow and develop with the community. Visitors are able to adapt the spaces to suit their creative needs.
The interpretation of art is complex, each viewer will perceive the same artwork in a different way. The design of this precinct was inspired by the terms of Contextualism and Isolationism which debates whether art should be interpreted by former judgement or by contemporary impression. The existing buildings which currently sit within the Laperouse landscape act as a frame for the new architectural gestures which replicate existing forms and are consistent with the site. This allows viewers to continue to interpret the Laperouse area within its existing context which has a vast indigenous and colonial history. In contrast to this the interiors juxtapose the exterior forms and viewers are able to see the new design in isolation. Extended thresholds create a buffering space from exterior to interior. These black portal-like walkways act as a transition space allowing visitors to disassociate the interior from the exterior. Translucent and soft materials contrast the solid masonry of the existing buildings to create a divergent spacial experience for visitors.
