Strange Land

We are living in a new geological epoch known as the Anthropocene, in which humans are the dominant force shaping our earth. In a time where our rapidly changing environment has prompted many to wonder what consequences our future entails we must look to design spaces that will shift, change and adapt to our increasingly unstable future. Strange Land encompasses these ideas, represents the unfamiliar and offers a path through physical and visual experiences.

In response, this proposal presents a Public Precinct + National Digital Archive of the Anthropocene to the headland of Guriwal - aiming to stimulate awareness, critical thought and discussion through art, film and public talk based programmes.

Serving as a projection of our environmental, political and social climate, each space has been informed by three key themes; [dis]placement, [em]placement and place[me]. This idea stemming from research into the history of the site but also from the tale of Daedalus and Icarus. Through the metaphor behind ‘the boy who flew to close to the sun’, the irony of Icarus’ death can be seen as a symbol of how our unchecked progress could ultimately lead to our own mortality unless changes are made now.
